Belmopan - 27 July, 2000.
Visiting Belize from the 27 to 29 July 2000 is a group of six Naval Cadets and eight Crew and Staff members of the Guatemala Naval School. They are embarked on the Guatemalan Naval Vessel “UTATLAN” under the command of Captain (Navy) Jorge Echeverria. Prior to their stop in Belize, they made port calls in Cozumel, Cuba and Isla Mujeres, Mexico.

Whilst in Belize, the Cadets, Staff and Crew members are being hosted by the Belize Maritime Wing and will attend a briefing at the Maritime Wing base in Ladyville. They will also tour Belize City and visit Altun Ha.

The briefing by the Commanding Officer Maritime Wing, Major Juan Teck, covers the various roles of the Maritime Wing regarding illegal activities. Discussions include joint drug interdiction efforts, cooperation in search-and-rescue and information sharing of illegal activities in southern maritime waters adjacent to Guatemala.

The visit is viewed as a confidence building measure and part of the Military to Military contact between Belize and Guatemala.
