Press Releases > Belize/Guatemala Discussions Continue in Washington D.C.
Belmopan - 26 March, 2002.

In the on-going effort to resolve the Belize-Guatemala Territorial Differendum, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Assad Shoman, and other members of Belize's negotiating team will meet with Guatemalan counterparts at the headquarters of the Organization of American States in Washington, D.C. on the 25th and 26th of April. The proposals made by the Facilitators of the process for the settlement of this dispute will be subject of the meeting.

The discussion of these recommendations will mark an important phase in the initiative that began in 2000, when both countries agreed to a Facilitation process under the auspices of the Organization for American States. The Facilitators are expected to provide the proposal for an agreed land border between Belize and Guatemala. They will also provide a mechanism for the development of those presently occupying the areas in question.
