At their
recent meeting in St. Lucia on the 6th and 7th of May, CARICOM
Foreign Ministers issued a statement in support of Belize's
recent efforts toward achieving a definitive settlement
of the Guatemalan territorial claim.
His
Excellency Lawrence Sylvester, Ambassador of Belize to CARICOM
Affairs, presented a report to the CARICOM Council of Ministers
of Foreign and Community Affairs (COFOR) on the progress
of the Facilitation Process that Belize and Guatemala are
currently engaged in under the auspices of the Organization
of America States.
In their
Communiqué the Council of Foreign Ministers of CARICOM
noted that the Facilitators are expected to submit their
proposals for settlement for the consideration of both governments.
They encouraged Belize and Guatemala to continue their commitment
to work towards a definitive settlement of Guatemala's Territorial
Claim to Belize and reiterated their firm support for the
territorial integrity and sovereignty of Belize.
