Military-to-Military contacts resume

Belmopan - 07 July, 2000.
The Ministry of National Security and Economic Development announces the resumption of the Military to Military meetings between the Guatemalan Armed Forces and the Belize Defence Force. Delegations representing both Headquarters met in Melchor de Mencos, Guatemala at 10:00 a.m. today 7 July 2000.

The Belize delegation was headed by Lieutenant Colonel Lloyd Gillett and includes 4 other BDF officers and 2 police officers. The Guatemalan delegation was headed by Captain de Fragata DEMN Otto Rene Fernandez Garcia and 8 other officers representing the Estado Mayor De La Defensa Nacional and Military Zone 23, Guatemala.

The discussion centers: on improving coordination of military activity and reduction of tension in the border area; information sharing; other confidence building measures and the basis for continued military to military contact.
