Removal Process for Illegal Settlers Commence

Belmopan - 01 March, 2001.
The removal process of illegal settlers in Machaquila, Rio Blanco and Valentin Camp commenced on Wednesday afternoon, February 28, 2001.

The six Belize side Commission members witnessed the issuance of compensation packages by the Guatemalan members of the Commission to a total of 7 heads of household, 3 at Machaquila and 4 at Valentin Camp.

The Joint Commission will continue its work on Thursday, March 1, 2001, when it is expected that the remaining households in the three settlements will have been offered compensation packages by the Guatemalan side, on the understanding that they will voluntarily depart from the settlements within twenty-four hours of receipt of payment.

Those settlers who refuse to leave will be issued with Expulsion Orders by the Belize side, to take effect 24 hours thereafter.

It is reported that there is a general disposition on the part of the settlers to accept the compensation packages.
